Seiko Mod: Is It Actually Legal? The Honest Answer You Deserve

Before buying, many people ask the same question: what exactly is a Seiko Mod? Is it a real watch, or a vague assembly of dubious parts imported in bulk? It is a fair question, and it deserves a frank answer, not a sales pitch.

What is a Seiko Mod, concretely?

A Seiko Mod (or Seiko Modified) is a watch built around an authentic Seiko movement, manufactured in Japan by Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII). This mechanical heart is what matters most: reliability, accuracy, longevity.

Around this movement, carefully selected components are assembled: case, dial, hands, bezel, strap. The result? A unique watch that exists nowhere else, driven by Japanese mechanics proven across millions of units.

It is not a copy. It is not a counterfeit. It is an original creation.

So, is it legal or not?

Yes, on one condition: the seller's transparency.

Assembling a watch with an authentic Seiko movement and third-party components is perfectly legal. What the law forbids is passing the watch off as an official branded model, or misleading the buyer about the nature of what they are purchasing.

At Time2Seiko, transparency is non-negotiable. Depending on your model and preferences, your watch can display the Seiko logo, no logo, or your own custom logo. In every case, each product page clearly states that it is a custom creation, not an official Seiko product. We do not play games with that.

How to recognise a trustworthy seller?

A few signals that never lie:

  • They are transparent about the nature and origin of the movement used
  • They clearly state that the watch is not an official Seiko product
  • They offer a warranty, in our case 2 years against manufacturing defects
  • They give you a choice over customisation, including the logo
  • The assembly is traceable: you know where and by whom your watch is made

On the other hand, run away if you come across:

  • Sites passing their watches off as genuine branded Seikos, which is misleading and illegal
  • Vague descriptions like "Japanese automatic movement" without stating the exact origin
  • No warranty, no reachable after-sales service

What Time2Seiko does differently

Every watch I assemble starts from an authentic Seiko movement, selected and tested. I work by hand, from France, choosing each part for its quality, never for its lowest price.

You can ask me any question about a component, a model or the assembly process. I always answer. Because a watch built to last starts with a transparent relationship with the person who makes it.
